A MONSTROUS BETRAYAL

Cillian didn’t know if it was day or night when he woke. His head ached—hell, his whole face ached. Before he’d fallen asleep, he’d yanked on his nose to set it, and that was enough to make him howl in pain and curse up a storm. These stupid terrorists and their stupid power-hungry designs on the magical world. For a brief moment, he wished he’d never met any of them, but that would mean not having met Jayne, or discovering his own powers as a Rogue, which, admittedly, were pretty cool.

If he got out of here alive, he needed to do some research into the history of Rogues instead of just relying on Jayne to share information with him.

“I can help you there.”

He yelped and jumped. A tall, thin figure materialized out of the darkness in the corner of the room.

Gina Labelle. Cillian recognized her from the pictures in the TCO file.

“You must be wondering how I can hear your thoughts. Not every Rogue has that particular power. I, though, come from a long and distinguished line, and am one of the strongest, most gifted Rogues you’ll ever meet.”

“Sounds like you’re braggin’ now.”

She uttered a bark of a laugh. “Aren’t you the brave one? Not bragging, dear Cillian. Sharing facts. How much have they told you about your abilities? About your history? About the powers we possess?” She waited for a response, but he didn’t answer. They hadn’t told him much at all, and he hardly wanted to admit that. “Nothing? Pity. Should you care to know more about your lineage, your place in the magical world, what you’re capable of, all you need to do is say so, and I will share all I know.”

“What’s the catch?”

“You join forces with us. We could use a Rogue such as yourself. Strong. Smart. Dedicated to the cause.”

He shook his head, ignoring the pain from his broken nose. “No. No way.”

“We wouldn’t use you for your gifts like they will. We will honor your spirit and strength. Teach you, not hold back vital information about your powers. Your magic.”

He bared his teeth. “Not gonna happen. Sorry.”

Labelle stalked around him slowly. He was reminded of his mother’s sleek seal-point Siamese cat, who would wind around his feet when she was hungry or wanted love. He hadn’t thought of Jezebelle in years, and here was Gina Labelle, slinking around in the dim light as if she were channeling the cat from his memories.

“Tsk. Isn’t that sweet? Your mother was quite beautiful. As was the cat. Purebred, was she?”

“Stay out of my head.” Without thinking, he envisioned a wall of ebony marble and pushed against her, hard. He sensed her taking a step back.

“Oh, well done. You’re already learning. I can teach you so much, Cillian. So much more than that silly girl.”

A stab of panic coursed through him. How had he done that? “Leave me alone.”

“I will do no such thing,” Labelle snarled. “You’ve cost me someone dear, Rogue. You best hope he is returned to me undamaged, or we will have a much bigger problem.
